Some Tips for Choosing a Secondhand Mobility Scooter
Many people with difficulty getting around have found that a mobility scooter can be an enormous help. A medical mobility scooter will allow you to get around freely but may be too costly for you. A possible alternative to buying a new scooter may be to purchase a pre-owned scooter which will be much more affordable.
As some insurance companies will cover much of the cost of a scooter, always check this out first. For people that need help with mobility, this is the best way to cover the costs. But if there is no help from your insurance company, you can economize by purchasing a used mobility scooter. It’s not too risky to buy a used scooter. Even though they could have been modified for the previous rider they can easily be modified to your requirements, and mobility scooters are built to endure for many years. However, before you buy one keep in mind the points that follow.
The first thing to think about is the battery. You will want to check the power source, so ask the owner to make sure it is charged before you arrive. A new battery can be bought but you need to be able to see the scooter working properly to ensure it fits your needs. The tires are the next consideration. Again, you can easily change the tires, you’ll need to use the scooter until then so tires need to be reasonably OK. If you will be using your scooter indoors or on smooth outdoor surfaces, small, untreaded tires are adequate. For use on rougher terrain, you should use a bigger tire that has more tread.
Your third consideration should be the scooter’s seat. It has to be comfortable and practical. If necessary you could fit a new seat, but you will want a comfy seat to use the scooter straight away. Some considerations when considering the seat are whether you prefer a seat covered in vinyl or cloth. Vinyl is easy to keep clean but can be hot and uncomfortable in warmer weather. A cloth covered seat is more comfortable but harder to clean. For extended periods of sitting, any sort of seat may become uncomfortable.
Mobility scooters have options to substitute or upgrade nearly all of the parts and accessories. This enables you to adjust the mobility scooter in line with your particular needs. The seat, battery, tires and battery charger are among the many features that can be exchanged on a mobility scooter.
It’s a good idea to talk about the mobility scooter with the present owner. This way you may find out if the scooter has been reliable and if there are issues you should know about. Remember that you can change many of the parts of the used mobility scooter you buy!
